Prof Mark Reed

Prof Mark Reed (PI) holds the HEFCE N8 Chair of Socio-Technical Innovation, working in the HEFCE funded N8 Agri-Food Resilience Programme and the Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University.

He is the author/co-author of >120 publications with >150 co-authors from 25 countries, including 74 international peer- reviewed journal articles, and has >7000 citations.

He has led research projects worth over
£10M. He is an experienced PI and project manager, notably leading the Rural Economy and Land Use programme’s flagship Sustainable Uplands project, which published >50 papers in top flight journals.

He was PI of the VNN Peatland project which led to a special section in Ecosystem Services and contributed to a 3* impact case study for REF2014.

He was a contributing author to the upland chapter of the UK NEA, was a contributing author to Defra’s PES Best Practice Guide, contributed to Natural England and Defra’s work on the scope for PES in the English uplands and was the architect of the UK Peatland Code, which is the voluntary standard for peatland restoration projects in the UK that want to be sponsored on the basis of their climate and other benefits.
